Shiv Nadar is a name synonymous with Indian entrepreneurship and technological advancement. He is the founder, chairman, and chief strategist of HCL Technologies and is the driving force behind its unprecedented growth. He was born in 1945 in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. His father was an industrialist working in the plywood industry and his mother was a homemaker. He completed his schooling from CBSE Board at Madras and his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the College of Engineering, Guindy.
Nadar has been involved in the IT sector since the late 1970s and is considered one of the pioneers of the Indian IT industry. He founded HCL in the year 1976, and since then the company has gone on to become one of the leading players in the IT sector in India. HCL is credited with spurting the growth of the Indian IT sector and transforming India into one of the leading countries in software development.
Education and Career
Shiv Nadar obtained his undergraduate degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the College of Engineering, Guindy – a part of the Anna University system. After graduation, Nadar worked with Walchand group in Pune, India and also at SESA in Paris. In 1969, he returned to India and joined Pantronix – a company started by his father – as a service engineer.
His experience in Pantronix was the catalyst that led him to start HCL in 1976. Nadar believed that India had the potential to create and offer world-class technology services, but lacked the necessary infrastructure to do so. Thus, he founded HCL – which was initially named Hindustan Computers Limited – to provide technology solutions to enterprises in India.
Achievements and Awards
Shiv Nadar’s numerous achievements have earned him numerous accolades, awards, and recognitions. He was the first recipient of the DVF (Distinguished Visiting Fellowship) of the Indian National Science Academy, and was conferred with the Padma Bhushan award in 2008 by the Government of India for his outstanding contribution to the growth of the IT industry. He has also been recognized with the prestigious INCOSAI (International Council of Scientific Assisted Industries) award, and the FICCI Lifetime Achievement award.
Nadar was also awarded the Economic Times Business Excellence Award in October 2020. This award was presented in recognition of his hard work, commitment, and total dedication to the cause of inspiring thousands of youngsters to become entrepreneurs and start their own ventures.
Philanthropic Activities
Apart from his numerous achievements in business and entrepreneurship, Shiv Nadar is also known for his philanthropic activities. He is the Chairman of the Shiv Nadar Foundation, a non-profit organization which supports multi-disciplinary research and experiences through education, arts, and culture. The Foundation aims to promote social equality, justice, and liberty and also works to ensure quality education for everyone.
He has also set up the Shiv Nadar University, a multi-disciplinary research university in Uttar Pradesh, and the SSN College of Engineering at Chennai. He also supports numerous organizations, including Ekalavya, a rural development initiative, and the Ratan Tata Trust, a charitable trust which works to improve and empower the rural population.
