Is AppleCare or AppleCare+ Worth It?

Apple products are known for their incredible quality, but not for their affordability. That said, there’s a certain peace of mind that comes with buying an Apple product and an extra layer of security with the AppleCare and AppleCare+ plans. But is the extra protection worth the hefty price tag? Let’s look at the facts on adding an AppleCare plan.

What Is AppleCare?

Simply put, AppleCare offers extra protection and technical support for Apple products. This includes iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch devices, Mac computers and displays, Apple TV, Apple Watch, iPods, HomePod and Beats products.

At its most basic level, AppleCare extends the manufacturer’s warranty on your Apple devices with one-year coverage for hardware repairs, 90 days of complimentary technical support, and the security of having software and OS updates designed for your device.

AppleCare+ offers the same coverage with an extended warranty and repair coverage for two years from the date of purchase for additional protection for accidental damage, such as liquid spills and cracked screens. Plus, you get 24/7 access to Apple experts for tech questions and advice.

AppleCare Plans

The standard AppleCare plan costs between $99-379 depending on the product type and model. Additional AppleCare+ plans range between $129-299 depending on the product. And if you’ve bought an iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch with its own financing plan or low-cost monthly price, you may have access to the “AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss” plan, which includes the features of the regular AppleCare+ plan plus added theft and loss protection.

What Does AppleCare Cover?

The coverage provided by AppleCare and AppleCare+ includes hardware repairs and parts, software support and repair, telephone support, and failed battery replacement.

AppleCare covers accidental damage due to user error, such as drops and liquid spills, as long as you have enrolled in the AppleCare+ plan. AppleCare+ also covers two incidents of accidental damage due to user error with a service fee of either $49 (for screen damage on an eligible iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch device) or $99 (for any other damages to eligible Apple products).

AppleCare+ does not cover damage caused by wear and tear, abuse, intentional acts of harm, or any form of damage not related to the designated eligible Apple products.

Do I Need AppleCare for My Apple Product?

The truth is, you don’t necessarily need AppleCare for your Apple product, as every Apple device comes with a one-year limited warranty and up to 90 days of free technical support. If you’re the type of person who takes extra precaution when it comes to their electronics, then AppleCare is definitely worth considering. AppleCare+ includes accidental damage protection, an extended warranty, repair coverage, and 24/7 access to Apple experts, which is definitely a great feature to have.

At the end of the day, whether AppleCare is worth it or not is up to your personal needs and preferences. If your Apple device is your most prized asset and you need extra protection, then adding an AppleCare plan might be the right choice.
