McKinsey & Company: Global Management Consulting Firm

McKinsey & Company

McKinsey & Company is one of the most distinguished and well-recognized global management consulting firms in the world. Founded in 1926 by James O. McKinsey, the firm has evolved from a management consulting firm to a well-structured, innovative global problem-solver. The firm provides services in corporate finance, risk management, strategy development, organisational structure, data analysis, and more. McKinsey has deep sector-specific knowledge, and powerful data insights to help solve some of today’s most complex business problems. The firm uses unique approaches and thought leadership to help clients maximize their potential, both locally and globally.

History of McKinsey & Company

McKinsey & Company was established in 1926 by James O. McKinsey in Chicago, Illinois. McKinsey was a professor of accounting at the University of Chicago and the author of the book Budgetary Control. He developed innovative business consulting approaches, inspiring other accounting professors and influencing the business world.

In 1941, Marvin Bower, who had taught at Harvard Business School, joined McKinsey. Bower implemented two strategies at McKinsey that shaped the firm today. First, Bower developed the McKinsey “Hire and Train” strategy, which was based on hiring the best and brightest individuals and teaching them on the job. Second, he developed the “Rule of Three” which meant that all McKinsey consultants should be working with no more than three clients at a time, and those clients must be geographically distant from one another.

Bower was succeeded by Rajat Gupta in 1999, who was the first non-American and first non-McKinsey alumnus to become chairman. He introduced a more encompassing global management consulting practice, focusing on CEO leadership and organizational alignment.

In 2003, Gupta was succeeded by Ian Davis, who implemented a strategy of knowledge integration, resulting in increased cross-sharing of ideas across industries and geographies. He also led the introduction of a performance system and global culture that rewarded those who promoted successful, innovative solutions.

In 2009, Dominic Barton was appointed Global Managing Director by McKinsey’s Board of Directors. Barton emphasizes the need for organizations to be forward-looking, listen to customers, and build businesses using the latest technology. He encourages McKinsey and its clients to look at the long-term impact of their decisions and to be more sustainable and ethical in their operations.
