Richard Charles Nicholas Branson was born on 18 July 1950 in Surrey, England. Raised in a comfortably middle-class household, Branson has a dyslexic sister, Lindy Branson. He had to face educational difficulties because of his dyslexia, but he was wise and street smart. His parents established a business that published magazines and local newspapers, which gave him a taste of entrepreneurship even as a child.
At the age of sixteen, shortly after his father died, Branson started Student, a youth-oriented magazine based on the opinions of students. It was primarily started to help him support his family members and it has since grown to become a popular magazine across the United States and Europe.

In 1972, at the young age of twenty-two, Branson established Virgin Records, taking advantage of his network of contacts from Student magazine to start selling music. He sold records from the back of a van and eventually opened a record store in London.
