Richard Desmond is a renowned British media mogul, businessman, and philanthropist who is currently the Chairman of Northern & Shell. He is best known as the owner of Express Newspapers as well as various entertainment and media outlets, including the Health Lottery. Early Life and Education of Richard Desmond

Born in north London in 1951, Richard Desmond was the son of Jewish emigrants who had fled Nazi Germany. He grew up in a modest housing estate, but despite his humble beginnings, he was determined to succeed. He attended Quintin Kynaston, a secondary school located in St. John’s Wood, and upon leaving, he enrolled in the fashionable Kensington and Chelsea College and studied economics and art.

After college, Richard Desmond worked as a salesman for the U.S. company A&R Records and then for Guinness Mahon, a merchant bank. In 1983, he established Northern & Shell, a publishing and trading business which quickly grew in products and services. By the late 80s, Desmond had established Express Newspapers, buying out the Sunday Express and Daily Star.

In 2000, Richard Desmond achieved further success with the launch of the Health Lottery. This lottery-style game operates differently to traditional lotteries and is used to raise money in aid of health-related charities. As well as the Health Lottery, he owns the television channels Channel 5 and 5Star, New! Magazine, OK! Magazine and various other publications.

In addition to owning and managing the various media outlets and publications, Richard Desmond is also the founder and majority shareholder of Northern & Shell which operates a number of digital television and radio stations across Europe.
